Domains & Fruit Trees - article written by domain owner GK
Recently, I went with my wife and bought a Meyer
Lemon fruit tree for our yard, and on the way back
we talked some about the similarities between domains/domain
traffic and fruit trees and their fruit.
People want traffic. People want fruit.
People buy traffic. People buy fruit.
People can buy their fruit at a grocery store or
fruit stand. And pay for it over and over, every day/week/month/year/etc.
Or they can buy a fruit tree and grow it themselves
and have that fruit paid for and theirs for the rest
of their lives.
People can buy their traffic from Google or others
of their ilk. And pay for it over and over, every
day/week/month/year/etc.
Or they can buy a domain name and have that traffic
for themselves, and have that traffic paid for and
theirs for as long as they pay to renew the name (for
chump change renewal fees).
With fruit from a fruit tree, you can sell that fruit
to others, or you can use it yourself.
With traffic from a domain, you can sell that traffic
to others, or you can use it yourself.
A fruit tree in a yard is pretty much planted in
a fixed spot at that location and does add some value
for anyone that subsequently owns the house, but it
is basically stuck in the ground there, continuing
to pour out fruit.
A domain (also still continuing to pour out traffic)
can actually be sold to someone else, easily for the
same price that was paid for it, but usually for a
price much higher than what it was bought for.
For someone that eats a lot of fruit, all those bucks
per pound you pay for sacks of apples, oranges, lemons,
whatever could easily add up to much more than the
price of simply buying a tree and having it all for
yourself.
For someone that buys and utilizes other people's
traffic, the bucks per hit they are paying for traffic
could easily add up as well, to, maybe the price you
could purchase a domain for? -- and of course all
subsequent traffic from that domain would be theirs
as well to use. Paid for. In perpetuity.
And they could probably, if they wanted to, sell
that domain sometime down the line for pretty much
what they paid for it (if they bought halfway smart),
or even at a profit from what they paid for it. And
this is AFTER they have gotten many years worth of
traffic from it.
Can someone please tell me how this is NOT a good
deal for this type of traffic utilizing domain purchaser?
Something the domain owner should think about next
time you are chomping away on your morning cantaloupe.
Something the yup pup business exec from Wall Street
SHOULD BE thinking about next time he is sipping on
his morning Starbucks latte.
